Exploring Modular Homebuilding for Habitat

Executive Summary:
Researchers assisted Habitat for Humanity International’s Operation Home Delivery in exploring modular homebuilding. A factory was envisioned as one high volume delivery method to replace homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The team assisted Habitat in the selecting a potential facility and identifying retrofits necessary for modular home production. The team prepared layout alternatives for the potential factory incorporating lean production principles. Detailed process descriptions were prepared for each workstation. Collaborative design was accomplished through a series of design workshops with Habitat representatives. Habitat decided to forego implementation of a modular factory and instead purchase modular homes (based on Habitat plans) from existing modular manufacturers.
